My excursion into concert-based contemporary music were motivated by the need to escape the restrictive aesthetics of film music with its short-term-high-pressure environment. Over the last 25 years, Astra has premiered most of my compositions, including large scale cantatas, choral, instrumental and vocal works. In Australia where smaller, independent music and concert organisations have short existences, Astra's longevity, high standards, brilliant programming and supportive and discerning audience are a small miracle. Astra remains one of Melbourne's - and Australia's hidden musical treasures.
